Snapchat announced how NextMind was able to revolutionize brain-computer interface technology that allows for simpler hands-free communication via electronic devices. And this entails headsets, computers, and AR/VR wearables too.
The breakthrough design of this technology not only monitors your neural activity, it carefully gauges your mind’s intent while interacting with the computing interface. Therefore, users can simply focus, allowing them to push a virtual button along the way.
However, the company did specify how NextMind does not carry the ability to read your thoughts or send out any signals to the brain. But that doesn’t mean there are no growing concerns from critics regarding how giant tech organizations would soon be directly lining into your mind, and how the brain will subconsciously handle your entire digital experience.
You’ll be surprised to learn that Meta is doing the same. In fact, it’s been on the brain-to-screen project since the year 2017. However, it did announce last year how it would now be putting a halt to the digital mind-reading endeavor. Instead, it appears to be keener on establishing electromyography-powered wrist-based projects.
These wristbands will allow wearers to control devices in a more natural way. This will be in relation to their muscle movement as Meta revealed how spinal cord neurons will pass electrical signals to hand muscles that make them move in a specific manner, similar to clicking a mouse or pressing a button.
The wristband will then decode those signals, translating them into digital signals that are picked up by your device. Therefore, users will now be empowered with full command of their digital life.
Similar to Meta’s approach, NextMind claims to be working on something very similar. However, it claims to track similar signals from the brain’s visual cortex through processing electrode sensors in your mind, which does make a lot of sense.
While many may be apprehensive of how much is too much, critics believe the future is all about embracing the virtual realm. This includes steering far away from keyboards while making the best use of tools that are able to detect brain impulses that enhance such interaction.
